Time management conflict

The holiday season is upon us, and we working women find ourselves in what I call the Seasonal “time management conflict” between family and work. Through in a few relatives and friends who dare to have birthdays in the holiday season and our time management plans are turned into nightmares. We find ourselves wishing for “unholidays and unbirthdays” such as those in Alice in Wonderland.  So how do we get through this season and enjoy it rather being overly stressed and completely exhausted?

The first thing we have to do is face the reality.  Unfortunately regardless of our jobs, our careers or our time, women are, in most cases, expected to be the driving force behind enjoyable holidays.  We are not only expected to be driving force with family and friends but often in the office.  All this puts extra stress on us during the holiday season. To get through this time of year the most important thing to do is first manage other peoples expectation and will not be responsible for everything.  Manage the expectations of your family, your friends and your colleagues.  Set the parameters for expectations before the holiday season gets into full swing because once it does it will be too late.

Once you have managed others expectations than manage your own.  Decide what you can really do and what you cannot do.  Use the time management skills you use everyday of the year. Do not panic just because the holiday season is more demanding.

When you have managed the expectatioins of others and your own then there are a few simple steps you can take to make the holiday season balanced and enjoyable.

  1. Make a road map of what your deliveries for work are during the holiday season.  The season usally begins middle of November and ends after New Years.  What are the important projects , decisions, accomplishments that need to be made.  It is important to make sure that your work does not suffer because of extra external demands during this time of year.  Others, especially men would love to point out how difficult it is for women to manage during the times where there are extra external demands.  Do not allow this to happen.

If you are in a job where you are providing a service such as a cashier, working in a store or the many other service oriented positions, then stay focused.  Make sure that when you are at work your work as your complete attention. Be punctual, and do not be distracted.

Not focusing on your work, when at work, only gives strength to those who believe women cannot balance families and careers.

Be Organized in your private Life.  Think of the holidays as a project with a beginning and an end.  Make a roadmap of what you need to do. Outline your the milestones in your project.  Milestones such as shopping, cooking, wrapping, maybe someones birthday or whatever you feel needs to be done in order to move you along. Set deadlines for you milestones.  Put them in a time line.  If you miss one, then try to catch it.  If you do not attaché timelines to your milestones then you will be doing everything at the last minute.

  1. Deligate. Do not take all the responsibility on yourself.  If you are hosting dinner then ask others to bring dishes.  If your children are old enough deligate some of the shopping or cooking to them.  Deligate the wrapping of gifts.  Have older children take care of the wrapping for the younger ones when appropriate.  In the office, make sure that everyone shares the responsibility if you are celbrating together. Just make sure you do not leave everything to yourself.
  2. Keep to the Basics.  Keep parties and dinners simple.  It is the Holiday season and it is about spending time with family and friends not outdoing each other.  Simple menu choices with easy dishes go over a lot better and are a lot easier than trying to produce a five star meal.  Do not over decorate, it can be very time consuming if you are on a tight schedule.  Enjoy the season for what it is not for what it appears to be.
  3. Keep travel simple.  This is sometimes hard if you are living or traveling to places that tend to get cold during the holiday season.  Jackets, sweaters and winter clothes take up a lot of room so try to pack less using items that can be interchanged.  If you are traveling to where it is cold, washable turtlenecks in different colors can accent a sweater or almost anything.  Less is better.
  4. Shop Online.  Almost everything is available online today especially toys and other gift items.  Shopping online saves time and allows you to focus on other things. Many online stores will even gift wrap for you, another timesaver If you need to go to a shopping mall, then go early in the morning.  Stores tend to get overly crowed later in the day. Many online stores will even gift wrap for you, another timesaver.
  5. Put the family or friends in a Hotel.  If you are tight on space, or even if you want your space, suggest to visitors that they take a hotel.  You would be surprised how many people are relieved when you suggest this.  Many people want their own space, and sometimes they believe suggesting a hotel themselves would be insulting you. I always put my family up a small family hotel near my apartment.  Having others underfoot when you are trying to balance the holidays and work can be very stressful.
  6. Do small things in advance.  Cooking, wrapping gifts, making decorations are all little things you can do one at a time when you have time.  Cook something and freeze it.  Wrap a few gifts when you have time.  Multitask with the small things.  If you do little things from time to time you will not be faced with a big list of things to do all at the last minute.
  7. Just say no.  During the holiday’s invitations are abundant.  Everyone is having a party, a celebration or going out for a small “holiday drink”.  You cannot be everywhere.  Pick what is important to you and politely decline the rest.  Makeup by sending the invite an e-mail or small note wishing them all the best during the very busy holiday season.

This year instead of dreading the holiday season, take control.  You will find if you manage the season just as you would manage your work, it will be much more enjoyable and will go by very quickly.

I wish all my readers a stressless “unholiday” season.  Alice

Why is Critical Thinking Important in College?

Daily life brings us a lot of issues and problems which require effective solutions.

Some of them are ordinary, but some aren’t: How to save my pocket without losing a quality of life? What to dress at the prom? What should I tell about instead of my unprepared diploma? Which bank is better to put money on deposit? Where and how can I find a decent job?

The best way to come up with a proper solution is to do it with a help of critical thinking. Most of experts say that thinking can be critical only when it is individual. According to Karl Popper’s theory, knowledge is always associated with the search of truth and elimination of errors through a direct criticism of theories and guesses of yourself or others. A person must think independently and solve even the most complex issues. There won’t be always somebody around to help you with the choice.

Critical thinking is a logical process of the reflection of objective reality. It is all about making a bare piece of information interesting and important – with a help of your creative skills and intellectual activity.These criteria build brick by brick your creative personality. But, analytical thinking is not obliged to be completely original, idea or belief of another person can be accepted as own conclusions, because it confirms the selected position.

– easily finds the necessary information can verify it;

– carefully studies all the possibilities;

– meticulously evaluates each option making own choices.

This phenomenon provides such tools which make your life more meaningful and successful. Autonomy of making choices is the first and perhaps the most important characteristic of critical thinking.

– intellectually independent;

– honest with themselves;

– they can not be manipulated;

– they are able to ask the right questions;

– they are good at Sherlock’s methods (look and see the connections between events and actions, build opinions on evidence);

– they can separate someone’s point of view, but the choice is based on their own conclusions.

There are different ways to learn how to think critically and analyze information. Such skills ensure making the most optimal solutions in any professional field, to be open for new ideas and knowledge. Critical thinking is necessary during the solving of any task, drawing the conclusions, evaluation and decision-making. Fortunately, this skill is not innate. You can acquire it during studying at college or special courses devoted to it. The earlier you begin to develop your analytical skills, the more successful your life will be.

How To Choose Wall Decor For Your Bedroom

There is something magical about a truly well-designed room. From the moment you step into it the attention to detail stands out. Drapes will compliment upholstery, all furniture in the room will be in unison, cupboards match dressers, which in turn match bedside tables finished thoughtfully with a well-chosen bedside lamp.

It’s easy to see when a room has been designed with purpose and a clear objective. Whether the room is an oasis of calm or an emotionally driven haven of color, the common theme is most well-designed bedrooms is consistency. Generally, people tend to select the components of their bedroom individually without giving much thought to how they’ll affect the room when combined together. We know what type of flooring we want, the type of the dressing table we like, or what color walls we desire, but we often forget to picture what the room will look like once the items are combined together.

Designing a room is more art than science. To achieve the perfect balance we need to think about how each component of the room affects the other and understand which aspects of the room are inherently complementary. An area of the room which is often overlooked, but makes a big difference is the walls. Choosing the right piece of wall decor can really improve a bedroom and selecting the right piece of wall art for your room is surprisingly easy if you follow these simple tips.

The Art Should Match Your Theme

It’s easy to pick a piece of wall art that we are drawn too, but the trick is to pick a piece that compliments the overall theme of the room. Canvas paintings are perfect for modern contemporary rooms.  The right piece combined with a modern furniture set will often create the desired ambiance, in the same way, wooden picture frames set against exposed beams create a traditional look which is perfect for older homes stacked with character.

Think About Size

When selecting a piece of art for your bedroom it pays to think about the size of the piece. If your walls are bare and you are looking for a centerpiece fixture then choose an imposing piece capable of drawing attention. If your room is smaller with wall mounted shelves try picking a smaller piece of art as large fixtures, in small rooms create a feeling of clutter and claustrophobia.

Pay Attention to Colour

The most important factor when choosing wall art is its color. When selecting a piece of art it’s important to think about how its color impacts the room. If you’re designing a calm tranquil room it’s a good idea to choose pieces which are predominantly green, blue or made up of pastel colors. Deep reds, pinks, and purples are emotionally driven colors and are best for creating rooms which are sensual and passionate. The neutral plain colored decor is great for complimenting modern rooms.

Choosing the right wall decor can make a big difference to any bedroom and although the tips mentioned above are tried and tested, when it comes down to it, choosing wall art is a personal choice so going with your gut is never a bad idea.

6 Sure Ways to find Inspiration for Writing

If there is one thing that you need as a writer, it’s inspiration. If you are not inspired to write you might not come up with a good piece. However, all of us at one point have experienced lack of inspiration or some form of bad feeling at the mere thought of having to write. However, feeling the joy and the inspiration towards writing makes a great difference. It not only gives you enthusiasm but also the energy that you need to accomplish the work. No matter what you are writing whether it’s a book, an article, or a column you need the inspiration to help you remain active throughout the process. Here are some ways to find inspiration for writing.

1. Read your favorite author

Just as the saying goes, to write well you need to read a lot. If you want to get inspired you need to read a book or a piece by your favorite author. This not only teaches you what works and what does not but also puts you into the mood of writing. Whenever you are feeling lethargic just take some 15 or 20 minutes and you will get the inspiration and the energy to start you off. The most important thing is to find a writer who inspired you and read his work.

2. Immerse yourself in your target audience

Just get into your target audience and try to listen to what they are saying. People can say different things especially if they know that you are there to listen to them. It’s, therefore, important to get into them without them knowing. This will help you get both sides of the story so that you can have a rough idea about what they enjoy reading.

3. Read a lot of quotations

People normally browse quotations for a number of reasons. They are memorable, insightful, and witty. They have everything that a good writing should have. To this end, the best thing to do is to let them inspire you. You can go to a website that has quotations and read through them before you can embark on your writing process. Just one of them is enough to spike an interesting new idea.

4. Listen to a dialogue and smart conversation

Although everyone knows about this, it’s worth mentioning here. Since some people have realized that listening to music helps, if it works for you go for it. You can also close your eyes and listen to music before embarking on your writing assignment. If you do this, within 30 minutes you will find that an idea pops up on your head and you can start writing immediately. It might seem small but if you have had trouble writing you need to try it out. You can also listed to smart dialogue to get you in the mood of writing.

5. Talk to your readers

You can always invite your readers to share with you about their frustrations and then choose 10 of them for free consultation. You will find that a number of them come out to tell you about what is troubling them. You will learn more from their comments and even get the best ideas that you can incorporate into your writing. While it’s humbling, sometimes you need to realize that your readers can also be the best source of ideas. They are actually full of wonderful ideas that you can use.

6. Lock yourself

This is one of the best idea. Always ensure that you write your first draft with the door closed. This does not mean that you literally close the door but rather you forget about every other person’s opinion. One of surest way to frustrate yourself is to start thinking about what other people think about your work.

Wrap up

The next time you are stuck with writing follow these key tips and you will be amazed at how fast you get inspired to start that writing project. That’s all that writing is about. Just start writing, get inspired, and enjoy.

Adjust Your Reading Speed

This tip may come as a surprise to you. But believe it or not, you want to adjust your reading speed based on the material itself.

There are actually varying degrees of speed reading. It’s not all ONE speed. In fact, there are quite a few speeds. For very technical journals, you’ll probably choose the slowest speed reading speed.

For average textbooks, you’ll read a little faster. If you’re reading comic books or very light material, you will probably use the fastest speed available to you.

Why is this?

Because no matter how quickly you can physically read, the brain can only process information so fast. And the more technical the information, the slower the brain processes it.

That’s why, after speed reading a Captain America issue, you can retain almost everything you’ve read going at breakneck speed while reading a technical journal at the same speed produces maybe one quarter of the comprehension.

By analyzing the material you’re going to read before you actually sit down to read it, you’ll get a pretty good idea, before even opening up the book or paper, of how quickly you can attempt to read it.

Speed Reading Preparation

This is probably another head scratching moment for you.

How do you prepare to read something? Do you have to do yoga? Is there some kind of energy drink you should be chugging? Should you be wearing certain clothes?

Actually, preparation has nothing to do with any of these things.

Let me give you an example of what I’m talking about without using reading. I think you’ll be able to relate to this.

You’re thinking of going to see the new Harry Potter movie but you haven’t read any of the books yet nor have you seen any of the previous films. You don’t want to seem like an idiot when you watch the movie, and you certainly don’t want to be totally lost when you watch it, so what do you do?

Well, you have several options. Probably the least painful is simply to read the Cliff Notes versions of each book and/or movie. This will at least give you some background of the Harry Potter world. That way, when you see the latest movie, you won’t be totally lost.

It’s the same way with reading. Whatever it is you’re going to read, especially if it’s something totally foreign to you like reading about how tell fortunes by reading somebody’s palm, you want to get some background on the subject so that you’re not going into it stone cold.

Many times we read faster simply because we’re more familiar with the material.

Think about it. When you read a book for the second time, you read it faster because you’re already familiar with the story. In fact, on the second reading, you’re able to go more in depth because you’re going beyond the surface level of the material. That was covered on the first read through.

The more familiar you are with the subject you’re reading, the quicker you will read through it. So do your preparation first.

You’ll find that one thing alone can almost double your reading speed.

Tips For Teaching Your Kids From Home

Without a good education, your children may suffer in life. They will be living with you for a long time or working a bad job. You may ask yourself what you can do to help your kids. A good answer is homeschooling. Here is a little advice that can help you with homeschooling your kids.

Check your state homeschooling laws before you set up your curriculum. A minimum number of homeschooling days, for example, can vary from state to state. Although the majority of states have a set curriculum which you can follow, in some states you may have to develop your own curriculum. Keep the school districts school day set up in mind when planning your own schedule.

Homeschooling can be difficult when you have little ones. The answer to this problem is in setting aside a specific time every day to address whatever needs each child has. Find activities that all ages are able to enjoy. Activities that can engage both of your kids are ideal for stimulating both children while also encouraging a bond between them.

Turn life into a learning activity. Children can learn from everything you do throughout the day. If your child needs to use better grammar when she speaks, then correct her so that she is using better grammar instead. Have them help you with cooking to teach measuring and conversion skills. Your child wants to please you, so she will learn quickly.

Look up the homeschooling laws in your state. Rules may vary from one state to another; therefore, you must know exactly what the rules are in your state. In some states, you will be required to prepare your children to take some standardized tests. A few states even require homeschooling parents to register themselves as a private school.

When teaching your children, provide them with hands-on lessons. Create foreign recipes if your child is learning about another culture. For example, when learning about Stalin they could cook perogies and cabbage rolls. If you are learning about WWII you can make German or Japanese foods. Through full sensory enrichment, learning is heightened.

A budget is key to homeschool success. Write out what types of resources are required and the types of field trips you want. From there, you can develop a budget for the year. You need to have separate accounts for each child. Expect to have a little wiggle room, as there will be unforeseen costs.

Your lessons should be hands-on. For example, make learning about foreign cultures fun by experimenting with foreign cuisine. For instance, your children may cook perogies and cabbage rolls to go along with a lesson about Stalin. If you are learning about WWII you can make German or Japanese foods. If your use all of the senses to learn they will gain more information.

It is important to fully understand what homeschooling is all about. There is an abundance of homeschooling resources online and with your state’s department of education. The idea of it is good, but there are a lot of time, money and other commitments necessary.

Do not allow your children to go through life without a solid educational background. Knowledge is power, so the saying goes, and a solid education is critical to that knowledge. You can give your children a great education through homeschooling. The information in this article will help you to homeschool your children effectively, ensuring that they have an excellent education.

Provide your child with a quiet place to study and learn that is free of distractions. Keep it separate from the normal play zone. If you need storage for learning materials, writing utensils or other supplies, get an inexpensive plastic drawer or use a box.
